Plant Bio
Hoya Krimson Queen is a cultivated variety of Hoya carnosa, a tropical epiphytic vine native to Southeast Asia and parts of Australia. Like other Hoyas, it produces thick, succulent-like leaves that store water and, when mature, can bloom clusters of fragrant, star-shaped pink flowers with red centers (often called porcelain or wax flowers). The “Krimson Queen” (also known as Tricolor) is prized for its stable variegation on the leaf margins, distinguishing it from the similar Krimson Princess, which has variegation in the center of the leaves.
Light Instructions
Light Instructions
Provide bright, indirect light for the best growth and strongest variegation. An east-facing window is ideal. South- or west-facing windows work well if the plant is set back a bit or filtered with a sheer curtain to avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. Too little light may cause the plant to lose some of its pink/white variegation and grow more slowly. Rotate occasionally for even growth. Supplemental grow lights are helpful in lower-light homes.
Is it Pet Safe?
Is it Pet Safe?
Yes. Hoya carnosa (including Krimson Queen) is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs by the ASPCA. It is a pet-friendly choice for households with curious animals. Note that the milky sap can still cause mild stomach upset if a large amount is ingested, so it’s best to discourage chewing.
Watering Instructions
Watering Instructions
Hoyas are semi-succulent and drought-tolerant—overwatering is the most common problem.
- Allow the soil to dry out most of the way (top 1–2 inches or more) before watering again.
- Water thoroughly until excess drains from the bottom of the pot, then empty any saucer so the plant never sits in water.
- In a small 2-inch pot, check more frequently (often every 7–14 days in spring/summer depending on light and temperature; less often in winter).
- When in doubt, wait a few extra days—these plants prefer to be slightly dry rather than constantly moist.
Specific Plant Care for This Species
Specific Plant Care for This Species
- Soil: Use a very well-draining mix (standard houseplant soil amended with plenty of perlite, orchid bark, or coco coir). Hoyas dislike dense, water-retentive soil.
- Humidity: Average home humidity (40–60%) is usually fine. Higher humidity supports healthier growth and eventual flowering.
- Temperature: Prefers 60–85°F (15–29°C). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below about 50–55°F.
- Fertilizer: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer. Reduce or stop in fall and winter.
- Growth Habit & Support: Trailing vines can cascade or be trained upward. Avoid removing the long tendrils if you want flowers, as blooms form on existing peduncles.
- Repotting: Hoyas prefer to be somewhat root-bound. Repot only when necessary (usually every 2+ years) into a pot just one size larger.
- Common Issues: Yellow or soft leaves often mean overwatering. Crispy edges or faded variegation can indicate too much direct sun or insufficient light.
With proper light and careful watering, your Hoya Krimson Queen will reward you with colorful foliage and, in time, beautiful blooms.
